Eco-Roof Incentive Program

The City of Toronto's Eco-Roof Incentive Program provides funding for the installation of green roofs and cool roofs on Toronto homes and buildings. These eco-roofs help make Toronto more resilient and better adapted to climate change. **Green roofs**, also known as living roofs or vegetated roofs, support the growth of vegetation. A green roof assembly includes a root-repellent system, a drainage system, a filtering layer, a growing medium (soil) and plants, installed on a waterproof membrane. Green roof systems are generally classified as extensive, semi-intensive or intensive. **Cool roofs** are roofing systems with an exterior surface that reflects the sun’s rays and reduces heat build-up from the sun’s thermal energy. A cool roof can be either a coating applied over an existing roof system or a new waterproofing membrane. Eco-roofs offer numerous benefits: * Reduce energy use, heating and cooling costs, and associated greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs). * Extend roof life by protecting the roof membrane from high surface temperatures and damaging ultraviolet (UV) rays. * Cool the air, helping to reduce urban heat. * Manage stormwater by absorbing rain that could flood basements, overload sewers and pollute waterways. * Increase habitat and biodiversity for birds, pollinators, urban wildlife and native plants. * Clean the air by sequestering carbon, creating oxygen and removing harmful pollutants. * Produce food through urban agriculture, supporting job creation, wellness, and food security. * Reduce noise by insulating buildings from noise pollution. * Beautify the city and create amenity space. * Reduce stress by providing access to nature. Applications are accepted and reviewed on an ongoing basis. Applications must be approved prior to commencing any work on the roof. Projects that have started, or are complete, may not be eligible for funding.
